Brightling Environment Group (BEG) will shortly be running a flower-insect timed count (aka a FIT count) at land on and around The Granary in Brickyard Lane, and would love your help. FIT counts are easy to do, and provide vital information about the state of pollinator populations: all they involve is watching a patch of flowers for 10-15 minutes, and recording the numbers and types of insects that visit your patch.
The plan is to spend a couple of hours recording in total (either on paper, or using the FIT-Count app on our mobile phones), and then have a BYO picnic at The Granary and (we hope!) enjoy the summer evening. Afterwards, BEG will collate everyone’s results, and upload them to the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme, an annual citizen-science project that runs all summer.
As FIT-counts need to be done on dry days, the date is tbc depending on the weather – if you’d like to register your interest, either WhatsApp Isabel Lloyd on 07939 137785 or email brightlingenvironmentgroup@gmail.com; we’ll be in touch with a confirmed date and time.
